Tips for choosing a professional photographer

We seem to get asked the same questions when we meet clients. We thought we would put some tips on here to help you choose your photographer for your wedding, portraits, events etc. We are sure you will have a lot more to ask, but here is a start.

Hope it helps you!

  • Create a list of photographers that you would like to meet. Find them by searching the internet, advertising, reading their testimonials or referrals.
  • Call or email and make an appointment to meet with them. Take note how long it takes them to get back to you and what their personality is like. Do they sound friendly? Did it take them a week or two to get back to you or was it relatively quick?
  • You really need to “click” with your photographer. After all you are spending quite a bit of time with them, they seeing you in all stages of planning and preparation plus you are trusting that they capture the day just as you had planned.
  • Make sure the photographer you are meeting listens to what you and your partner would like. We cannot stress enough how important it is to have a good rapport with the photographer from the minute you meet.
  • Look at all the products the photographer has. Ask lots of questions.
  • For example, did they take all the photographs in these albums or is it someone else’s work?
  • How long does it take to get an album back from them?
  • Do you get the images on a disk in high resolution?
  • If an album is part of your package, ask if you choose the photos or do they?
  • A lot of photographers prefer to choose the photographs for several reasons. Ask them to explain the reasons to you.
  • Do you have a specific style in mind for your photographs? Ask the photographer if they only photograph a particular style, or they can adapt to the style you are after. For example: can they do romantic, candid, black and whites, formal, fun, classical? Are they open to suggestions?
  • You may have a photo checklist, can the photographer work with that?
  • Ask about costs and make sure you are completely clear on all charges. Ask what their price does and doesn’t cover. You don’t want any surprises at the end of it. Also ask how much deposit is needed, when the balance is due and if there is a cancellation fee. Make sure you know exactly what you are getting for your money.
  • Does the photographer do this for fun or is a full time job for them?
  • Discuss how many photographs will be taken and how many you can expect to receive. Also ask how you see your proofs, is it online or in a proof book?
  • Ask the photographer what happens in case of illness or injury and they are unable to photograph your day. Is there a back up plan?
  • Is the photographer well groomed?
  • Does your photographer use an assistant and do you need to pay them too?
